polka dots and rainbows: a table design to celebrate summer
July 11, 2014

hello friends!

the sun is out, the beach is calling, the grill is hot and a familiar aroma of coppertone fills the air — it is officially summer!

perhaps it’s due to the colorful array of pool noodles lining the shelves nowadays, but i can’t help but equate these sunnier times with rainbow hues.  and if you’ve read any of my earlier posts, you know that polka dots accompany everything.  everything.

so when it came time to celebrate a whole year of my littlest one bringing all her joy to our family, i knew just how to adorn our table.  take a looksy below for inspiration on creating your own happy space, whether it be for a birthday, backyard bbq or just a cheerful change in decor!

what i used (i tried to put as many links as i could find online below — fyi: there are many spritz items only found in-store).  a big thanks to my mom for the close-up shots!

– colored, handled mason jars and striped straws from michaels
– red faux-croc frame from tj maxx

yellow gerber daisies from wholesale flowers in linda vista
glitter adhesive letters from oriental trading
– large white frame from michaels
– totally forged “somewhere over the rainbow” print from a pinterest image (word can work miracles, sometimes!)
– rainbow sock monkey (from the old navy cash wrap area about a year ago)

and because everyday for me, is a new photobooth opportunity — i put a spritz polka dot tablecloth to work on our wall, and added some paper lanterns for interest.

confession: i loved it a whole lot.  it might still be up…

savvy shamrocks: dressing your dining table for saint patty’s
March 17, 2014

hello friends…and happy saint patrick’s day!

i love today. it’s a holiday the whole world celebrates, that’s just plain fun and makes people happy. it helps that my mom got really into it growing up — making sure we always had at least something green on for school — and also that i married into irishness. a lot of irishness.

so, it only makes sense that — given my newfound obsession with my local 99-cent-only store — that i’d need to create a table centerpiece.  cyrillynn from any 2nd now, a fellow san diego style blogger, recently encouraged me to post a diy on another little something i’d put together (which i still need to do) — but i’m taking her advice now and sharing how to fancy up your own table with some glittery green and gold.

still working on that guinness beef stew? no worries — with just a bit of glassware, inexpensive seasonal decor and fresh flowers, you can whip this up in a mere 15 minutes!

what you’ll need:
– a trifle bowl
– a smaller container to fit inside trifle bowl (i used the dip compartment from a chips-and-dip set)
– a modern vase
– a cake stand
– white everyday plate*
– gold decorative charger*
– bunch of carnations
– bunch of baby’s breath
– decorative glitter picks (i love these shamrock and hat ones!)*
– green or white glitter garlands*
– glitter adhesive letters
– other ireland-inspired tchotchkes

* found while gleefully losing myself in the aisles at 99-cent-only

step 1: arrange the main structure / glassware arrangement.  place the everyday plate on the gold charger, then the modern vase on top of the plate.  set the trifle bowl atop the cake plate.

step 2: strip leaves from carnation stems and arrange bunch in line in modern vase.

step 3: bunch baby’s breath into smaller container, that can fit inside trifle bowl while still leaving a perimeter for garland.  place garland around this smaller container and flush with its top, so baby’s breath sticks out just slightly above garland.

step 4: create desired saying with glitter letters, and arrange/drape glitter garland around both pieces.

step 5: add decorative glitter picks to one or both flower bunches.  sprinkle glitter on plate and top of cake plate, if desired.  arrange other tchotchkes.

step 6: *pat* yourself on the back, you crafty leprechaun!  and enjoy that stew!

“a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something.”

this is how our friends at merriam-webster define passion.  seems a little *boh-ring* to me, don’t you think?  i prefer this definition a bit further down:

intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction.”

there we go.  i’d say that more accurately sums up how we feel about those things in life that jump us out of bed in the morning.  those things that keep us up the night before, dreaming about how we can forever keep doing what had us creating, buzzing, and feeling electrified that day.

so are you passionate — like, truly passionate — about what you do?  does your career excite you?  enable you to impact how others see and feel about themselves on a daily basis?

chances are, you’re sadly shaking your head and sighing “i wish!”
well, enter my saturday night.  i had the great privilege of being invited as a san diego style blogger to attend come2gether, a stylist showcase presented by bellus academy to benefit beauty changes lives.

talk about a wow factor.  it’s safe to say that the energy present in the moniker warehouse in san diego’s east village, you would not find amongst very many other groups of gathered professionals.  you could feel it, and — as someone looking in on the beauty industry — i have to confess i was pretty jealous.

a captive audience

these artists were so excited to see creation in-the-making and beyond supportive of their own (the cheering abounded).  one thing i kept hearing was “the business we’ve chosen is a powerful one.”  and when you stop to think about it — how true is this?  when you can transform someone’s appearance, aren’t you also transforming their confidence and, in turn, outlook on the world?  beauty is powerful, and it can change lives.

nina kovner was the evening’s emcee, and she opened the event with this same message (“i felt it the minute i walked into beauty school”).  she also shared how connective social media is for the beauty space, with searching fingers flying at the mention of every new instagram handle (modernmike13, houseofpop).

the showcase then opened, and the crowd came alive.  how fun was this??  to say i was inspired would be a gross understatement — i’m now ready for quite the makeover.

stylish savings: a trip to the bellus academy salon
January 6, 2014

bellus academy salon poway, ca
bellus academy salon, poway, ca

i love “firsts” — so what better way to start the new year, than with what-turned-out-to-be a great one!

having already been familiar with bellus academy through a couple of friends who are proud alumni, as well as connections via the san diego style bloggers network and fashion week san diego — i’d thought many a time before about checking out the poway campus’ salon.  and in the interest of being a better “do-er” this year (and needing to pinch my pennies a bit more), i gave them a ring friday morning on the way to work.

i received a call back from the delightful carissa, and — given the terrible non-planner i am — i was so pleasantly surprised when she said they could take me in that day at 5:30p.

bridget warmly greeted me at the reception desk, and walked me back to her station. after an initial chat about what i was looking for (a slight trim to get my strands healthy and shaped, while keeping as much length as possible), she brought her instructor matt over to advise on overall direction.

getting started (the awkward selfie is totally my doing!)

i really enjoyed talking with her during my visit, about her time in the program so far, her background and family…especially since i just can feel the cosmetology student waiting to jump out of my corporate marketing body!  (side note: she even checked to make sure the water temperature was comfortable — no one does that anymore!  i thought it was really sweet.)

i was extremely impressed with how kind the instructors were to all the students on the floor, and equally with the sense of camaraderie i got from the class of students. contrary to some salons, there was no pretentiousness — just a lively group of people perfecting their skills. and with the very clear guidance matt offered bridget, i felt like i was receiving quite the quality education, too!  i should also credit his fellow instructor, who assisted with my sideswept bangs (wish i had asked for his name!).

i’m so happy i “took the plunge” and went for it!  i think it’s safe to say my hair is happy as well.  i also love that i can help someone further their career *and* practice some newfound fiscal responsibility at the same time!

pretty, soft hair à la bridget.  so. much. better.

(in case you’re wondering, a cut is $12 — pick that jaw up — and first-timers receive half-off their initial service.  what?!? — oh yes, ’tis true.  you are able to tip your stylist in cash, or with a bellus gift card they can use for their own services, product, etc.)

thank you, bridget and matt!  look forward to seeing you again soon!

time to trinket: another last-minute gift guide
December 24, 2013

so, here we are again…the 24th of december.  and — while we may say this every year — Christmas really did sneak up on us this time!  i hope you and yours are enjoying a wonderful holiday season.

i started this annual gift guide two years ago, as a way to celebrate how much I loved my mom’s affinity for little trinkets and tchotchkes we found in our stockings growing up.

and this year, i’m taking it to a new level —  with the official 2013 elle webb style “under-$5-but-looks-anything-but” gift guide!  keeping with last year’s timing, this issue is also a bit late (but hey — new year’s gifts are totally acceptable!).

perhaps all the expenses in buying a new home (thank you, Lord!) are still a bit too fresh — or it’s my own little protest against the overcommercialization of this holiday — but gathering fab finds that are kind on the wallet, too, just makes me so giddy!  and i guarantee you, while you would never suspect it — everything on this list is truly $5 and under!

let’s get started!

you can bank on these cuties
i think i may be the last person on this earth to discover the 99 cent store.  i had always been skeptical of my friends’ stories of this veritable wonderland of savings, but now that i’ve seen for myself — oh boy.  unhealthy obsession time.

these unbelievable cute ceramic own coin banks actually started my co-dependence.  i’ve gifted them now a few times, with nothing but the most gleeful response.

i then came across this metallic pig — also a coin bank — and had to scoop it up.  don’t you think it makes a really whimsical place setting (perhaps to wish prosperity in the new year)?

mug shot
i love coffee.  and i love mugs even more.

take a looksy at these two delightful ones from target — how can you go wrong with a personalized item, or a gift that comes already wrapped in a bow!

coffee mugs from target with personalized initial and bow

and speaking of personalized finds, i just couldn’t pass up a tea with my own name (also at 99 cents only!).

lindsay gardens tea bags from 99 cents only store

let’s get ladylike
i am a sucker for the daintier things in life, so you can imagine my delight upon spotting this rose soap (99 cents only) and floral print journal (marukai market, san diego).

and what else do ladies love?  jewelry, of course!  check out these gorg beaded rings from — you guessed it — 99 cents only.

what are your favorite “$5 and under” secrets?  would love to hear them!

happy holidays, everyone.  hold your loved ones tight and may you feel the joy and peace in the Christmas promise this year.

girl power: san diego style bloggers’ one-year “blogiversary”
October 8, 2013,,, san diego style bloggers
with the lovely pau, jen, little lola & jess

although this post is a little dated (better late than never, right?) — i was so excited to recently help celebrate the one-year “blogiversary” of the san diego style bloggers group.

having been on a bit of a baby hiatus, it was wonderful to see and catch up with some old blogger friends — as well as meet many new ones!  as i’ve mentioned before,  i am just so continually impressed with the energy, ambition and — of course — personal style expressions of this group of gals.  from rock-and-roll cool to flirty feminine, perfectly on-trend to effortlessly eclectic, everyone feels free to be themselves (and dress accordingly!), and i’ve found myself making several mental notes for future looks.
with cyrillynn of any2ndnow, a definitive first wave authority (and whose style is beyond cool!)

and what a great way to be introduced to the fabulous store that is shimmer!  from unending accessories to rows and rows of affordable, #ootd-worthy options — browsing during the event was too much fun.  many thanks to shimmer for hosting us.

i reminisced a bit with paulina from lil’ bits of chic about the very first meet-up last august, and a huge kudos goes to she and rachel (now of chicago chic blog) for the investment they’ve put into growing this lovely and encouraging community.

so, to wrap up this little recap of our night, what better way than with the ultimate quote featured on our delightful blogger gifts, courtesy of tuyaymya from white tee black dress — “bloggers do it better!”  (not to worry, they’ll be on sale soon!), bloggers do it better,

sassy stockings: a last-minute gift guide
December 22, 2012

so, if you’re anything like me, it’s like four days before christmas — and while you had all the best intentions to really plan out super-fun gifts…you didn’t.

elle webb style to the rescue! after all the fun finds i uncovered last year, i have been so excited to present the second-annual official elle webb style holiday gift guide. this year, it just has *much* more of an abbreviated, last-minute focus (busy toddler plus four-months-pregnant will do that to you!).

when putting together the list last year, i shared a bit about my inspiration behind, if you will, “curating” the best in trinkety goodness. and that spirit continues this year, with a roundup of special little somethings that caught my eye.

hit me with your best shot

disposable funny cameras at urban outfitters

while hunting for kitschy extras for a recent party, i came across these delights at urban outfitters. remember those cheesy cameras people used to place on their wedding reception tables, that featured pre-printed designs of wedding bells and champagne flutes? enter the modern, more hilarious versions.

i opted for the “unicorns & rainbows” and “yolo-and-other-crazy-phrases” models. i’m dying to see the “after” shots, plus doesn’t taking film to be developed feel so gleefully “old school”?

look good (and feel even better about it!)

vava vida teal dahlia travel bag

some people love shoes. i also am a major shoe-fan, but my real passion is bags. it doesn’t even matter what type. trendy handbags, monogrammed canvas totes, or a myriad of can-this-really-be-this-cute recyclable shopping bags — i’ll take them all. may be time for a support group.

so you can imagine what stood out when browsing the site of new san diego startup vava vida (read more on them here). in spite of my addiction, i can feel good about purchasing the amazing teal dahlia travel bag. made by members of a women’s co-op near new delhi, sporting this arm candy actually helps a fellow female provide for her family. now that’s empowering!

velvety smooth

velvet manicure ciaté

my sweet friend kelly just gifted me with a fabulous velvet manicure kit by ciaté. while i haven’t had a spare second to give it a spin, the minute i saw the box — i was hooked. so perfect for the holidays, and even the busiest mom can warmly welcome a nail-sized dose of glam!

call me, maybe

target mossimo glittery iPhone holder case

yes, i know. now it will be in your head for the rest of the day. but doesn’t humming this little tune secretly make you a bit more cheerful?

so will this glittery wristlet / cell phone holder from target. the finishing touch of sparkle for that christmas eve cocktail party or starbucks run before holiday light-seeing.

and while you’re at target, make sure to pick up the elf eye palette.’ll.ever.spend. who needs more of a description than that?

happy holidays! may they be merry and bright.

date night: gray floral with red accents
October 2, 2012

target floral skinny Jean what to wear for date night

polka dot clutch with rose

red high heels linea paolo nordstrom rack

it’s not often my husband and i escape our adorable-but-havoc-wreaking toddler. so when we are blessed with a glorious night out, my mind goes immediately to planning an evening look (as it should, right?). even the most stressful week suddenly seems lighter with a dress-up opportunity!

as you may remember from a recent post, a darling pair of gray floral skinnies from target made my list of fall floral picks. i finally picked them up, skipped gleefully out of the store, and have been experimenting ever since.

this was new territory for me, to say the least, but it’s been fun to sport them in different ways — even for someone sized more marilyn than twiggy.

i eventually landed on pairing them with more neutrals — a belted black express cardigan and loose charcoal forever 21 tank — putting the emphasis on bold accessories. i’ve been a bit shy about rocking these uh-mazing red heels from nordstrom rack, and this surprise polka dot find from a company exhibiting next to a tradeshow i attended last year, has been sitting on a closet shelf.

so, what better time to break out these accessories-in-hiding than for a special occasion?

we made our way to the red door in mission hills. i had only heard good things, but had no idea the dinner that awaited us would be so, so scrumptious. and the paso robles red that started it all off? wow. i do love me a fine central coast wine.

grilled flat iron steak and wedge salad for me, and shrimp/chorizo app and pork schnitzel for him. by far, one of the most delicious eatings we’ve shared.

what does date night look like for you? would love to hear your go-to outfits and favorite local spots!

a local look: first san diego style bloggers meet-up
August 11, 2012

i was so excited to see the @sdstylebloggers handle pop up on twitter, then watch the group take off — but most of all about the chance to meet some of these ladies last saturday!

a huge kudos to paulina of lil bits of chic and rachel of da paura for making this group a reality. it is so fun to see our fair city on the fashion blogging map, and i’m really honored to be part of such a — well, fashionable — group!

the shopaholics boutique in little italy hosted us (such a great spot, can’t wait to make it back for a shopping date!), and we all were spoiled with the most darling of gift bags with shop belina jewelry. unfortunately i missed the deliciousness of magner’s irish cider, so i guess a trip to the field is in order!

a big thank you to paulina for graciously taking the shots of me below!

i’m on a boat: tropical style aboard the coronado ferry
August 11, 2012

i love living in a city where almost every outing or event feels like you’re on vacation — so you can imagine how spoiled we are here in san diego.

coronado has always held special meaning for me. from saying “i do” on the island, to celebrating fourth of july each year on orange, gazing across the bay while crossing the bridge always feel a bit magical to me.

so when my husband suggested we make the coronado ferry trip a weekly adventure, i jumped at the chance. each week now, i cherish our little ritual of walking down the ramp to board, waving a temporary goodbye to the sunkissed buildings of the downtown skyline, and saying hello to the charming coronado ferry landing.

traveling by boat is, for me, one of life’s little luxuries. what a nice escape from our overcrowded roadways, to be able to watch the waves lap around the boat, and smile at the painting-like scene of delicate sailboats set against a heavy steel background of docked aircraft carriers.

in the fantasy in my head, i’m usually decked out during these trips in full ralph lauren nautical, complete with striped sweater over my shoulders, with a pair of aviators and navy topsiders to finish the look. in reality, i can usually be spotted in an everyday tee and jeans.

in an attempt to deny summer’s soon closing (sad face), i channeled some island inspiration for this week’s mini-voyage. pulling out from the closet’s far reaches a bright blue hibiscus-printed tunic, and pairing it with dark stovepipe trouser jeans and yellow patent wedges, i felt happier right away. or maybe it was my newly lightened locks, courtesy of sarah at beauty on the rocks (she’s amazing, and i feel human again!).

check out the ferry schedule today and make a trip. you won’t regret it.
