door darling: the cutest custom wreath you’ll ever make — for less than $25!

summer door wreath diy michaels green and gold baylor

hello friends!

i hope you all enjoyed a wonderful weekend!

as evidenced by my recent posts and instagrams, i have become a little crazy about seasonal DIYing.  so when the weather took a turn for the warmer (and i realized my door had been “naked” since Christmas!) — i knew the time had come for a playful, “summer’s almost here” dose of door darling.

my mom was in town — which always helps send my creative tendencies into full swing — and we headed to every crafter’s promised land, the glorious treasure trove that is michaels.  i had in my mind a very simple and affordable concept, punched up with some whimsy, and i’m so happy with the piece that resulted!  it’s a super fun way to fling my baylor green and gold, and for less than $25!

what you’ll need:

summer wreath diy michaels green and gold baylor

– scotch tape
a floral wreath form (i chose the 14″ green version)
your choice of wired grosgrain ribbon (you’ll need two rolls to cover a 14″ form)
note: i serendipitously stumbled upon my polka dot find, so i encourage you to take the time to roam the ribbon aisle and see what strikes your fancy!
– three (or more, up to you) felt flower clips
these little babies were peeking out of a bin at the end of the silk greenery aisle, and i have a feeling they’re going to end up on my clothes, scarves, office meeting agendas, etc.  they’re so fabulous!

step 1:

summer door wreath diy michaels green and gold baylor

open the first roll of ribbon and attach a piece of scotch tape to the end.  press it firmly to the inside of the wreath form (anywhere on the form is ok).  if you’d like it to be a bit more secure, feel free to add more tape or use a straight pin.

step 2:

summer door wreath diy michaels green and gold baylor

after making the initial attachment, start to wrap the ribbon around the wreath form, covering the tape if you’d like.  i left about a 1/2″ or so between borders, but you are welcome to make them closer or further (note: if you make them closer, you’ll probably need another roll of ribbon).

step 3:

summer door wreath diy michaels green and gold baylor

continue wrapping the ribbon all the way around the form. sometimes it helps to take the actual roll and do a few “pre-loops” that you can tighten as you go.  when you get to the end of the first roll, simply tape the end down and repeat steps 1-3 with second roll.

step 4:

summer door wreath diy michaels green and gold baylor

admire your fully wrapped wreath form!  go you!

step 5:

summer door wreath diy michaels green and gold baylor

summer door wreath diy michaels green and gold baylor

take your first felt flower clip.  press it to open clamps and slide the bottom clamp under one of the ribbon borders, depending on where you’d like flowers to be placed.  tweak placement and angle to your liking.

repeat with other clips.  i chose three, but it’s up to you!

step 6:

summer door wreath diy michaels green and gold baylor

pat yourself on the (creative) back for designing a totally awesome, totally “you” custom wreath!

step 7:

proudly hang your new creation on the front door — or wherever you’d like it to show it off!

it’s good to be back: (re)visiting the world of postpartum fashion
September 23, 2013

well, friends — it has definitely been awhile.  but i guess that’s what a super busy season at work — plus a new baby! — mean for the little blog.  needless to say, i’m excited to be re-emerging in all aspects of my life…and on what better day to do so than “stylish mom monday”!

and with that said, i now have the privilege of navigating through post-baby style…which can be a challenge. having done this before, i made a personal vow to put more effort into it this time around (with my first, the shell-shock took quite some time to wear off!).  to really just be more functional overall, was more of how the pledge went.

about six months after my first little one arrived, i stumbled upon the most epic of finds at target (where else, right?).  it was a perfect black matte jersey a-line dress…with built-in shapewear.  yes, you read that right — built-in shapewear.  i cannot tell you how many times this dress has been singlehandedly plucked from the closet in a fit of desperation.  its cost per wear has got be down to pennies at this point.

i really feel like dresses of such a caliber deserve a name — let’s call her “sophie.”  sophie’s been a faithful friend throughout these mommy years, so when number 2 was finally here — guess who was back on the scene to help me transition back to work?  again, built-in shapewear, folks — it’s a beautiful thing.

to help her in this latest re-début, i’ve added some fashionable allies, in the way of this chunky statement necklace from francesca’s, opaque gray tights that i’m becoming unhealthily obsessed with, and fancy footwear courtesy of nordstrom rack.

sadly, it appears that this sartorial version of “mommy’s little helper” can no longer be found at target.  but never fear!  i optimistically bring you two fantastic alternates: i’m loving this merona faux wrap dress (especially in the that’s-so-hot-right-now “soho grape” hue), as well as this ponte number from the limited (an establishment somewhat new to san diego, i believe, but a tried-and-true favorite for this texan!).  does the red not scream dolce & gabbana’s fall collection (at a fraction of the price, obvi)?  and both, of course, becoming even more shapely with the help of the assets superior slimmer.

so, thank you for bearing with me — it’s good to be back.  would love to hear how you do “stylish mom monday”!

stylish mom monday: i’ve got a furry feeling
November 12, 2012

forever 21 belted furry vest

it’s officially fall in southern california!

after months of groaning about our unusually warm temperatures, we are finally enjoying a delightful dose of chilly.  and when the weatherbug app shows a number less than 70, what does any style-minded female do?  break out the super-cute winter wear, of course!

i bought this vest last winter on a much-needed retail therapy tour, and am loving that i can finally sport it again.  i hadn’t tried it belted yet, so i ventured into some new territory here.  fur is an easy way to dress up a casual long-sleeve tee and trouser jeans (perfect for casual friday), and feel free to add some punch on the bottom with animal print heels!  (bonus: it also can hide whatever the littles spilled on you while getting ready!)

how did you celebrate the belated coming of fall?

vintage Eiffel tower photo

“a walk about paris will provide lessons in history, beauty, and in the point of life.” ― thomas jefferson

i remember my first trip to paris so vividly. literally, my inaugural steps out of the métro and up the trocadéro station stairs, are forever emblazoned on my brain.

the somewhat-terrifying teenage realization of being an ocean away from everything i knew, was soon replaced with the giddiness of first glimpsing a monument i’d come to know on paper for so many years.

young girl in paris

(a 17-year-old me, june 1996)

i had no idea something could be so grand — so all-consuming of every emotion and textbook image memory. it took my breath away, in the most amazing way possible. and even as i write this, i still get a little choked up thinking back to my sheer awe.

i wish i’d realized at the time how fabulous of an experience i was having. you can miss so much of the significance in where life takes you when you’re young, especially as a homesick 17-year-old. now, though, i’d have an apartment lined up within 24 hours and my family sold on staying across the pond!

so you can imagine how excited i was this morning — while digging through some recently untouched parts of my closet — to stumble upon this sparkly tower necklace i’d purchased at forever 21 (probably a year ago!) and completely forgotten. it went right on, of course, and then inspired this post!

with all that said, i happily bring you today’s “stylish mom monday” list of tower-inspired touches to add that delightful bit of french flair. and remember, don’t take for granted how fabulous today could seem in a year from now!

enjoy!

stylish mom monday: put a fall spin on that summer look

today show transition summer looks to fall video Lori lucky mag

happy labor day, everyone! in keeping with the spirit of the holiday at hand, i’ll keep this one short and sweet.

i love being able to catch the today show during the week — takes me back to my days spent gallivanting around the east side. the style segments are always chock full of easily applicable tips and affordable looks, and today (pun intended) was no exception.

from shorts to peplum tops, and the “mullet skirt” to neon pieces, i love these “before and after” ways to style four popular trends. and now i definitely have to pick up the polka dotted chambray blouse i spotted this weekend at old navy. so cute and classic!

stylish mom monday: trading leopard spots for polka dots
August 19, 2012

i’m really excited about this post, as it features a fashion risk i would have never taken even a couple years ago.

however, after seeing it mastered by blair eadie (my daily icon!), i mustered up the courage to give it a try.

sassy leopard print, meet festive polka dots. loving how well you two get along!

this unexpected pairing is a great way for rushed moms to create new, bolder neutrals!

it started with a j. crew eblast sunday morning…and is now popping up everywhere! news flash, folks: black and white is officially hot for fall.

need some starter pieces to jump on this trend? check out a few of my must-haves below.

happy trending!

let’s hear it for these two from old navy!  dying over the polka dot sweater — so very blair eadie.

and while you can’t really tell from the photo, this easy-breezy a-line jersey find is pleasantly thick and structured. pair it with a bright blazer to add some quirk and color.

and don’t forget the hair flair! try the “gemma” from bitty baby bands to add a whimsical finishing touch to any look. (psss…they stretch for grown-up gals to rock them, too!)

stylish mom monday: flirt with florals
August 8, 2012

hello friends!

hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the summer. and for those of you with me in sunny san diego, hang in there with this *awfully sunny* weather! i just know there’s a gracious soul who wants to lend me their beachfront home until it cools off…

i thought for this week’s issue of “stylish mom monday,” we could cover something near and dear to my heart: the almighty flower. for those of you who’ve read elle webb style for some time now know, i think i was supposed to have been given petals for hair. whether by print or as accessories, floral accents seem to make their way into my daily look.

perhaps it’s the romantic in me that is continually drawn to all things floral — daydreaming of cottage life in an english garden, finding wooden gazebos at the end of wildflower-filled meadows…wow, i really did just enter fantasyland for a moment there!

or maybe it’s just that beautiful blooms make me happy. and in a world that can be so heavy, aren’t we all entitled to a little lighthearted apparel? i sure think so.

{you love the roses—so do i.

i wish the sky would rain down roses, as they rain from off the shaken bush.

why will it not? then all the valley would be pink and white and soft to tread on.

they would fall as light as feathers, smelling sweet;

and it would be like sleeping and like waking, all at once!

george eliot, roses}

so, with the words of this fairy tale poem as my inspiration, i proudly present the official stylish mom monday lineup of “floral finds to fully fall for”!

mossimo target floral denim jeans

this first pick actually set this post in motion. i’d been spotting more and more patterned denim in magazines, and very luckily stumbled across this fabulous pair at target one evening during my typical run (read: sanity attempt). i love that they could totally work as a glam neutral, transitioning well into fall.

gray felt floral wristlet amazon

speaking of fall (hard to believe it’s around the corner!), here’s another key piece from amazon that i could see showing up both on a coffee date and fancy night out downtown. and you know how i swoon over gray.

claire's the icing resin flower studs

i might need to talk with someone about this next one. i’m afraid i have developed an unhealthy obsession with these rose-shaped resin studs from claire’s / the icing. give me a few months and i’ll have completed the rainbow! seriously, though, they’re the perfect touch of everyday girly (with the resin finish adding some whimsy).

and try them on a necklace, too, courtesy of francesca’s aptly named “teatime” necklace. can’t.help.myself.

while we’re on the accessory front, i must share my most delightful of recent discoveries. ever see the amazing headband on a sweet baby’s head and think, i would love that for…me! enter bitty baby bands. i happened upon this carlsbad-based creator of cuteness via a twitter friend, and haven’t looked back.

bitty baby bands vivienne headband

bitty baby bands vivienne headband packaging

bitty baby bands red dahlia headband

the story behind the company will inspire you, the headbands are affordable and gorgeous — and they fit grownup gals’ heads, too! i just received the vivienne (top photos, including lovely packaging) for a friend’s little lady, am eyeing a gazillion others for my own tot, and have my sights set on the red dahlia (bottom photo) for myself!

what’s your go-to floral approach? as you can well imagine, there are always flower-focused posts in the works, and i’d love your suggestions!

stylish mom monday: try a tunic dress for some casual chic
July 9, 2012

blonde topknot teal sunglasses yellow flower studs

so…it’s that time again — for stylish mom monday!

this week i thought i’d offer an outfit tip of my own. while i’d love to always be perfectly pulled together (cue sarcastic cackle), for me it really does come down to comfort. if i’m not comfortable, i just get cranky — and that’s not attractive on anyone.

originally planned for the fourth, i opted for a sunny sunday morning to try this look. starting with a navy striped tunic dress, i added a cropped jean and braided belt, topping it all off with bright yellow flower studs and wedges for some pop. and i finally attempted a topknot!! oh yes, it’s the little things.

what are your favorite ways to mix comfy and cute?
