love is (still) in the air: a belated valentine’s day look
February 17, 2014

hello friends,

i hope you all enjoyed a wonderful valentine’s day, whether that meant dinner with your special someone, a night in with the gal pals, or some solo-and-happy retail therapy!

having spent friday in the most casual of gear with my littlest in tow, i deemed yesterday my makeup opportunity for this year’s “day of love” outfit.

what resulted from (what i humbly consider) a delightful pairing of leopard, blush and red.  wishing you a fabulous week!

navy upon navy upon navy: monochromatic made comfy
October 16, 2013

i love that part of the development of this little blog of mine, has been pushing my own style limits.

while it probably doesn’t seem daring in the least to most, embracing one color from head to toe used to seem like a fashion risk i just couldn’t pull off.  but with some experimentation over the past two years — as well as a newfound obsession for all things navy — i’ve been sporting variations of the singularly hued look below in making the transition from summer into fall.

the slouchy cardigan keeps me warm (besides serving as the perfect mask for arms-in-need-of-toning!), and along with the forgiving striped tunic, is tops when wanting to stay comfortable.  opaque tights in the same hue help to visually trim my legs, as do the floral patterned platform wedges (read more here on how the pair inspired this blog!).

it’s good to be back: (re)visiting the world of postpartum fashion
September 23, 2013

well, friends — it has definitely been awhile.  but i guess that’s what a super busy season at work — plus a new baby! — mean for the little blog.  needless to say, i’m excited to be re-emerging in all aspects of my life…and on what better day to do so than “stylish mom monday”!

and with that said, i now have the privilege of navigating through post-baby style…which can be a challenge. having done this before, i made a personal vow to put more effort into it this time around (with my first, the shell-shock took quite some time to wear off!).  to really just be more functional overall, was more of how the pledge went.

about six months after my first little one arrived, i stumbled upon the most epic of finds at target (where else, right?).  it was a perfect black matte jersey a-line dress…with built-in shapewear.  yes, you read that right — built-in shapewear.  i cannot tell you how many times this dress has been singlehandedly plucked from the closet in a fit of desperation.  its cost per wear has got be down to pennies at this point.

i really feel like dresses of such a caliber deserve a name — let’s call her “sophie.”  sophie’s been a faithful friend throughout these mommy years, so when number 2 was finally here — guess who was back on the scene to help me transition back to work?  again, built-in shapewear, folks — it’s a beautiful thing.

to help her in this latest re-début, i’ve added some fashionable allies, in the way of this chunky statement necklace from francesca’s, opaque gray tights that i’m becoming unhealthily obsessed with, and fancy footwear courtesy of nordstrom rack.

sadly, it appears that this sartorial version of “mommy’s little helper” can no longer be found at target.  but never fear!  i optimistically bring you two fantastic alternates: i’m loving this merona faux wrap dress (especially in the that’s-so-hot-right-now “soho grape” hue), as well as this ponte number from the limited (an establishment somewhat new to san diego, i believe, but a tried-and-true favorite for this texan!).  does the red not scream dolce & gabbana’s fall collection (at a fraction of the price, obvi)?  and both, of course, becoming even more shapely with the help of the assets superior slimmer.

so, thank you for bearing with me — it’s good to be back.  would love to hear how you do “stylish mom monday”!

stylish mom monday: i’ve got a furry feeling

forever 21 belted furry vest

it’s officially fall in southern california!

after months of groaning about our unusually warm temperatures, we are finally enjoying a delightful dose of chilly.  and when the weatherbug app shows a number less than 70, what does any style-minded female do?  break out the super-cute winter wear, of course!

i bought this vest last winter on a much-needed retail therapy tour, and am loving that i can finally sport it again.  i hadn’t tried it belted yet, so i ventured into some new territory here.  fur is an easy way to dress up a casual long-sleeve tee and trouser jeans (perfect for casual friday), and feel free to add some punch on the bottom with animal print heels!  (bonus: it also can hide whatever the littles spilled on you while getting ready!)

how did you celebrate the belated coming of fall?

date night: gray floral with red accents
October 2, 2012

it’s not often my husband and i escape our adorable-but-havoc-wreaking toddler. so when we are blessed with a glorious night out, my mind goes immediately to planning an evening look (as it should, right?). even the most stressful week suddenly seems lighter with a dress-up opportunity!

as you may remember from a recent post, a darling pair of gray floral skinnies from target made my list of fall floral picks. i finally picked them up, skipped gleefully out of the store, and have been experimenting ever since.

this was new territory for me, to say the least, but it’s been fun to sport them in different ways — even for someone sized more marilyn than twiggy.

i eventually landed on pairing them with more neutrals — a belted black express cardigan and loose charcoal forever 21 tank — putting the emphasis on bold accessories. i’ve been a bit shy about rocking these uh-mazing red heels from nordstrom rack, and this surprise polka dot find from a company exhibiting next to a tradeshow i attended last year, has been sitting on a closet shelf.

so, what better time to break out these accessories-in-hiding than for a special occasion?

we made our way to the red door in mission hills. i had only heard good things, but had no idea the dinner that awaited us would be so, so scrumptious. and the paso robles red that started it all off? wow. i do love me a fine central coast wine.

grilled flat iron steak and wedge salad for me, and shrimp/chorizo app and pork schnitzel for him. by far, one of the most delicious eatings we’ve shared.

what does date night look like for you? would love to hear your go-to outfits and favorite local spots!

old navy polka dot chambray shirt leopard print heels

sometimes i get a bit delusional and think i can pull off cropped pants. yesterday was one of those “sometimes.”

hopefully the polka dot chambray and leopard print heels added a touch of much-needed sass (and offset my not-so-sample-size bottom half!), but i still think the look screams mom on the sidelines with orange slices.

oh well, that stage of my life is around the corner — might be good to just go ahead and acknowledge it. 🙂 bring on the mini-van!

wishing everyone a fabulous weekend!

friday night margaritas: denim & blues
September 14, 2012

hello friends! can i get a “tgif”??

i was really happy to celebrate the retirement of a longtime friend tonight. i was even happier to celebrate with margarita in hand, courtesy of the always-tasty casa de bandini in the carlsbad forum.

if you’ve read a few of my recent posts, you’ll know i’ve been crushing on this amazing polka dot chambray button-down at old navy. suffice it to say that i was beyond excited to finally pick it up this week, and sport it tonight!

i still need to invest in some colored bottoms, so i played it a bit safe and paired my new find with some dark trouser jeans and the roundtoe floral wedges that set this blog in motion.

i can’t say enough about how comfortable it is. here’s to many more posts where it makes an appearance!

how do you style chambray?

happy weekending!

weekend colors: navy stripes meet lemon and orange
September 9, 2012

happy sunday evening! hope everyone enjoyed a great weekend.

thought i’d share my look today — colorful and casual. as somewhat of a final attempt to keep summer here, i doubled up on the citrus hues. the j.crew striped top that is slowly becoming my uniform, it seems, plays the neutral for lemon yellow shorts and orange cutout wedges.

and accessory of choice goes to my new coach tote (steal of the century at the viejas outlet!). it’s the perfect size, and i adore the metallic-flecked canvas. durable goes glam!

a huge thanks to my friend and neighbor christian for stepping in as photog today!

stylish mom monday: adventures in black and white
August 14, 2012

it started with a j. crew eblast sunday morning…and is now popping up everywhere! news flash, folks: black and white is officially hot for fall.

need some starter pieces to jump on this trend? check out a few of my must-haves below.

happy trending!

old navy striped jersey dress

let’s hear it for these two from old navy!  dying over the polka dot sweater — so very blair eadie.

and while you can’t really tell from the photo, this easy-breezy a-line jersey find is pleasantly thick and structured. pair it with a bright blazer to add some quirk and color.

bitty baby bands headband

and don’t forget the hair flair! try the “gemma” from bitty baby bands to add a whimsical finishing touch to any look. (psss…they stretch for grown-up gals to rock them, too!)

…and the pièce de résistance for today. bravo, banana republic. complete fabulousness.
