time to trinket: another last-minute gift guide
December 24, 2013

so, here we are again…the 24th of december.  and — while we may say this every year — Christmas really did sneak up on us this time!  i hope you and yours are enjoying a wonderful holiday season.

i started this annual gift guide two years ago, as a way to celebrate how much I loved my mom’s affinity for little trinkets and tchotchkes we found in our stockings growing up.

and this year, i’m taking it to a new level —  with the official 2013 elle webb style “under-$5-but-looks-anything-but” gift guide!  keeping with last year’s timing, this issue is also a bit late (but hey — new year’s gifts are totally acceptable!).

perhaps all the expenses in buying a new home (thank you, Lord!) are still a bit too fresh — or it’s my own little protest against the overcommercialization of this holiday — but gathering fab finds that are kind on the wallet, too, just makes me so giddy!  and i guarantee you, while you would never suspect it — everything on this list is truly $5 and under!

let’s get started!

you can bank on these cuties
i think i may be the last person on this earth to discover the 99 cent store.  i had always been skeptical of my friends’ stories of this veritable wonderland of savings, but now that i’ve seen for myself — oh boy.  unhealthy obsession time.

these unbelievable cute ceramic own coin banks actually started my co-dependence.  i’ve gifted them now a few times, with nothing but the most gleeful response.

i then came across this metallic pig — also a coin bank — and had to scoop it up.  don’t you think it makes a really whimsical place setting (perhaps to wish prosperity in the new year)?

mug shot
i love coffee.  and i love mugs even more.

take a looksy at these two delightful ones from target — how can you go wrong with a personalized item, or a gift that comes already wrapped in a bow!

coffee mugs from target with personalized initial and bow

and speaking of personalized finds, i just couldn’t pass up a tea with my own name (also at 99 cents only!).

let’s get ladylike
i am a sucker for the daintier things in life, so you can imagine my delight upon spotting this rose soap (99 cents only) and floral print journal (marukai market, san diego).

and what else do ladies love?  jewelry, of course!  check out these gorg beaded rings from — you guessed it — 99 cents only.

what are your favorite “$5 and under” secrets?  would love to hear them!

happy holidays, everyone.  hold your loved ones tight and may you feel the joy and peace in the Christmas promise this year.

elle

girl power: san diego style bloggers’ one-year “blogiversary”

with the lovely pau, jen, little lola & jess

although this post is a little dated (better late than never, right?) — i was so excited to recently help celebrate the one-year “blogiversary” of the san diego style bloggers group.

having been on a bit of a baby hiatus, it was wonderful to see and catch up with some old blogger friends — as well as meet many new ones!  as i’ve mentioned before,  i am just so continually impressed with the energy, ambition and — of course — personal style expressions of this group of gals.  from rock-and-roll cool to flirty feminine, perfectly on-trend to effortlessly eclectic, everyone feels free to be themselves (and dress accordingly!), and i’ve found myself making several mental notes for future looks.

so, to wrap up this little recap of our night, what better way than with the ultimate quote featured on our delightful blogger gifts, courtesy of tuyaymya from white tee black dress — “bloggers do it better!”  (not to worry, they’ll be on sale soon!)

it’s good to be back: (re)visiting the world of postpartum fashion
September 23, 2013

well, friends — it has definitely been awhile.  but i guess that’s what a super busy season at work — plus a new baby! — mean for the little blog.  needless to say, i’m excited to be re-emerging in all aspects of my life…and on what better day to do so than “stylish mom monday”!

and with that said, i now have the privilege of navigating through post-baby style…which can be a challenge. having done this before, i made a personal vow to put more effort into it this time around (with my first, the shell-shock took quite some time to wear off!).  to really just be more functional overall, was more of how the pledge went.

about six months after my first little one arrived, i stumbled upon the most epic of finds at target (where else, right?).  it was a perfect black matte jersey a-line dress…with built-in shapewear.  yes, you read that right — built-in shapewear.  i cannot tell you how many times this dress has been singlehandedly plucked from the closet in a fit of desperation.  its cost per wear has got be down to pennies at this point.

i really feel like dresses of such a caliber deserve a name — let’s call her “sophie.”  sophie’s been a faithful friend throughout these mommy years, so when number 2 was finally here — guess who was back on the scene to help me transition back to work?  again, built-in shapewear, folks — it’s a beautiful thing.

to help her in this latest re-début, i’ve added some fashionable allies, in the way of this chunky statement necklace from francesca’s, opaque gray tights that i’m becoming unhealthily obsessed with, and fancy footwear courtesy of nordstrom rack.

black merona jersey dress with red necklace and heels

red chunky statement necklace from francesca's

red stiletto heels from nordstrom rack

sadly, it appears that this sartorial version of “mommy’s little helper” can no longer be found at target.  but never fear!  i optimistically bring you two fantastic alternates: i’m loving this merona faux wrap dress (especially in the that’s-so-hot-right-now “soho grape” hue), as well as this ponte number from the limited (an establishment somewhat new to san diego, i believe, but a tried-and-true favorite for this texan!).  does the red not scream dolce & gabbana’s fall collection (at a fraction of the price, obvi)?  and both, of course, becoming even more shapely with the help of the assets superior slimmer.

so, thank you for bearing with me — it’s good to be back.  would love to hear how you do “stylish mom monday”!

sassy stockings: a last-minute gift guide
December 22, 2012

so, if you’re anything like me, it’s like four days before christmas — and while you had all the best intentions to really plan out super-fun gifts…you didn’t.

elle webb style to the rescue! after all the fun finds i uncovered last year, i have been so excited to present the second-annual official elle webb style holiday gift guide. this year, it just has *much* more of an abbreviated, last-minute focus (busy toddler plus four-months-pregnant will do that to you!).

when putting together the list last year, i shared a bit about my inspiration behind, if you will, “curating” the best in trinkety goodness. and that spirit continues this year, with a roundup of special little somethings that caught my eye.

hit me with your best shot

disposable funny cameras at urban outfitters

while hunting for kitschy extras for a recent party, i came across these delights at urban outfitters. remember those cheesy cameras people used to place on their wedding reception tables, that featured pre-printed designs of wedding bells and champagne flutes? enter the modern, more hilarious versions.

i opted for the “unicorns & rainbows” and “yolo-and-other-crazy-phrases” models. i’m dying to see the “after” shots, plus doesn’t taking film to be developed feel so gleefully “old school”?

look good (and feel even better about it!)

vava vida teal dahlia travel bag

some people love shoes. i also am a major shoe-fan, but my real passion is bags. it doesn’t even matter what type. trendy handbags, monogrammed canvas totes, or a myriad of can-this-really-be-this-cute recyclable shopping bags — i’ll take them all. may be time for a support group.

so you can imagine what stood out when browsing the site of new san diego startup vava vida (read more on them here). in spite of my addiction, i can feel good about purchasing the amazing teal dahlia travel bag. made by members of a women’s co-op near new delhi, sporting this arm candy actually helps a fellow female provide for her family. now that’s empowering!

velvety smooth

velvet manicure ciaté

my sweet friend kelly just gifted me with a fabulous velvet manicure kit by ciaté. while i haven’t had a spare second to give it a spin, the minute i saw the box — i was hooked. so perfect for the holidays, and even the busiest mom can warmly welcome a nail-sized dose of glam!

call me, maybe

target mossimo glittery iPhone holder case

yes, i know. now it will be in your head for the rest of the day. but doesn’t humming this little tune secretly make you a bit more cheerful?

so will this glittery wristlet / cell phone holder from target. the finishing touch of sparkle for that christmas eve cocktail party or starbucks run before holiday light-seeing.

and while you’re at target, make sure to pick up the elf eye palette. the.best.five.dollars.you’ll.ever.spend. who needs more of a description than that?

happy holidays! may they be merry and bright.

fashion week san diego: “art & beauty” night recap
October 6, 2012

beehive bellus academy fashion week san diego

i was one excited gal walking up to the “art & beauty of fashion” event on wednesday night.  i think a large part of that excitement stemmed from a possible makeup artist hidden deep down inside, who couldn’t wait to see the bellus artists in action.

to say i left feeling incredibly inspired, could win for “understatement of the year.”  from just being at the super swank w hotel, to watching oh-so-talented stylists in action, to being surrounded by beautiful original artwork — i was ready to conquer every creative dream i’ve ever had!  oh, and not to mention all.the.amazing.san.diego.style.  it’s official, friends — we have an incredibly fashionable town!  i could have filled an entire lookbook from my people-watching.

what probably stayed with me the most, though, was the video profile of the designers playing on the second floor.  produced by mahal style, this documentary was a touching tribute to not only the natural talent and skill they all possess, but the courage and perseverance they’ve had to show time and time again to arrive at where they are today.  as a working mom, the work-family balance segment with sharie ellis of love is a devil particularly struck a chord with me; and i love, love, love this quote from stacie may: “it’s ok not to follow what everyone else does.”

i’ve also found that one of the most fun aspects of these events, are the new people you meet.  while waiting in the drink line, i felt so lucky to bump into allison andrews, founder and director of fashion week.  looking darling in a multicolored frock by the aforementioned stacie may, she couldn’t have been more welcoming.  and just ahead of me in this line were the ladies from terracotta ny, two former investment bankers who just launched a gorgeous neckwear line.  (to yidi and alina, thanks for letting me pal around with you!)  and to close out the night, i ran into my sweet friend annie martin — check out her fun blog here.

enjoy the shots below, and look forward to seeing everyone tonight at the runway shows!

date night: gray floral with red accents
October 2, 2012

target floral skinny Jean what to wear for date night

polka dot clutch with rose

red high heels linea paolo nordstrom rack

it’s not often my husband and i escape our adorable-but-havoc-wreaking toddler. so when we are blessed with a glorious night out, my mind goes immediately to planning an evening look (as it should, right?). even the most stressful week suddenly seems lighter with a dress-up opportunity!

as you may remember from a recent post, a darling pair of gray floral skinnies from target made my list of fall floral picks. i finally picked them up, skipped gleefully out of the store, and have been experimenting ever since.

this was new territory for me, to say the least, but it’s been fun to sport them in different ways — even for someone sized more marilyn than twiggy.

i eventually landed on pairing them with more neutrals — a belted black express cardigan and loose charcoal forever 21 tank — putting the emphasis on bold accessories. i’ve been a bit shy about rocking these uh-mazing red heels from nordstrom rack, and this surprise polka dot find from a company exhibiting next to a tradeshow i attended last year, has been sitting on a closet shelf.

so, what better time to break out these accessories-in-hiding than for a special occasion?

we made our way to the red door in mission hills. i had only heard good things, but had no idea the dinner that awaited us would be so, so scrumptious. and the paso robles red that started it all off? wow. i do love me a fine central coast wine.

grilled flat iron steak and wedge salad for me, and shrimp/chorizo app and pork schnitzel for him. by far, one of the most delicious eatings we’ve shared.

what does date night look like for you? would love to hear your go-to outfits and favorite local spots!

elle webb

stylish mom monday: an eye for eiffel

vintage Eiffel tower photo

“a walk about paris will provide lessons in history, beauty, and in the point of life.” ― thomas jefferson

i remember my first trip to paris so vividly. literally, my inaugural steps out of the métro and up the trocadéro station stairs, are forever emblazoned on my brain.

the somewhat-terrifying teenage realization of being an ocean away from everything i knew, was soon replaced with the giddiness of first glimpsing a monument i’d come to know on paper for so many years.

young girl in paris

(a 17-year-old me, june 1996)

i had no idea something could be so grand — so all-consuming of every emotion and textbook image memory. it took my breath away, in the most amazing way possible. and even as i write this, i still get a little choked up thinking back to my sheer awe.

i wish i’d realized at the time how fabulous of an experience i was having. you can miss so much of the significance in where life takes you when you’re young, especially as a homesick 17-year-old. now, though, i’d have an apartment lined up within 24 hours and my family sold on staying across the pond!

so you can imagine how excited i was this morning — while digging through some recently untouched parts of my closet — to stumble upon this sparkly tower necklace i’d purchased at forever 21 (probably a year ago!) and completely forgotten. it went right on, of course, and then inspired this post!

with all that said, i happily bring you today’s “stylish mom monday” list of tower-inspired touches to add that delightful bit of french flair. and remember, don’t take for granted how fabulous today could seem in a year from now!

enjoy!

August 14, 2012

it started with a j. crew eblast sunday morning…and is now popping up everywhere! news flash, folks: black and white is officially hot for fall.

need some starter pieces to jump on this trend? check out a few of my must-haves below.

happy trending!

let’s hear it for these two from old navy!  dying over the polka dot sweater — so very blair eadie.

and while you can’t really tell from the photo, this easy-breezy a-line jersey find is pleasantly thick and structured. pair it with a bright blazer to add some quirk and color.

stylish mom monday: flirt with florals
August 8, 2012

hello friends!

hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the summer. and for those of you with me in sunny san diego, hang in there with this *awfully sunny* weather! i just know there’s a gracious soul who wants to lend me their beachfront home until it cools off…

i thought for this week’s issue of “stylish mom monday,” we could cover something near and dear to my heart: the almighty flower. for those of you who’ve read elle webb style for some time now know, i think i was supposed to have been given petals for hair. whether by print or as accessories, floral accents seem to make their way into my daily look.

perhaps it’s the romantic in me that is continually drawn to all things floral — daydreaming of cottage life in an english garden, finding wooden gazebos at the end of wildflower-filled meadows…wow, i really did just enter fantasyland for a moment there!

or maybe it’s just that beautiful blooms make me happy. and in a world that can be so heavy, aren’t we all entitled to a little lighthearted apparel? i sure think so.

{you love the roses—so do i.

i wish the sky would rain down roses, as they rain from off the shaken bush.

why will it not? then all the valley would be pink and white and soft to tread on.

they would fall as light as feathers, smelling sweet;

and it would be like sleeping and like waking, all at once!

george eliot, roses}

so, with the words of this fairy tale poem as my inspiration, i proudly present the official stylish mom monday lineup of “floral finds to fully fall for”!

mossimo target floral denim jeans

this first pick actually set this post in motion. i’d been spotting more and more patterned denim in magazines, and very luckily stumbled across this fabulous pair at target one evening during my typical run (read: sanity attempt). i love that they could totally work as a glam neutral, transitioning well into fall.

gray felt floral wristlet amazon

speaking of fall (hard to believe it’s around the corner!), here’s another key piece from amazon that i could see showing up both on a coffee date and fancy night out downtown. and you know how i swoon over gray.

claire's the icing resin flower studs

i might need to talk with someone about this next one. i’m afraid i have developed an unhealthy obsession with these rose-shaped resin studs from claire’s / the icing. give me a few months and i’ll have completed the rainbow! seriously, though, they’re the perfect touch of everyday girly (with the resin finish adding some whimsy).

and try them on a necklace, too, courtesy of francesca’s aptly named “teatime” necklace. can’t.help.myself.

while we’re on the accessory front, i must share my most delightful of recent discoveries. ever see the amazing headband on a sweet baby’s head and think, i would love that for…me! enter bitty baby bands. i happened upon this carlsbad-based creator of cuteness via a twitter friend, and haven’t looked back.

bitty baby bands vivienne headband

bitty baby bands vivienne headband packaging

bitty baby bands red dahlia headband

the story behind the company will inspire you, the headbands are affordable and gorgeous — and they fit grownup gals’ heads, too! i just received the vivienne (top photos, including lovely packaging) for a friend’s little lady, am eyeing a gazillion others for my own tot, and have my sights set on the red dahlia (bottom photo) for myself!

what’s your go-to floral approach? as you can well imagine, there are always flower-focused posts in the works, and i’d love your suggestions!
